Recycling Glass

Glass is one of the many materials that is accepted under SK Recycles’ program at SARCAN depots and is widely used in and across different products and materials.  Glass is accepted only at SARCAN depots across the counter and not in your city’s recycling container.

Recycling glass helps to reduce waste in landfills and helps to conserve natural resources, as manufacturing with recycled glass uses less energy to create new glass from raw materials. Glass collected in the SK Recycles program at all SARCAN depots is sold to end-markets in Western Canada where they are turned into fibreglass insulation and reflective beads for road marking paint.

Glass cannot be recycled in your city’s recycling container because glass breaks down easily during collection, and when broken glass mixes with paper and other containers, it can easily be embedded in the recycled materials that it is mixed with, rendering these materials unrecyclable.

By dropping glass off at depots, you can ensure that they will be recycled properly.

What’s Accepted?

Glass comes in many forms and shapes. Some of the more common accepted glass items include clear and coloured non-deposit glass bottles and jars like salad dressings, oils, vinegars, pickles, soy sauce, etc.

Deposit glass beverage containers are separate from the SK Recycles program but can be returned to SARCAN depots for deposit refund.

These types of glass are made from different types of glass materials than what is commonly used to manufacture bottles and jars and interferes with the glass recycling process.
