How can our Nations unique needs be addressed within the recycling program?
- At SK Recycles, we understand that each Nation has its own unique needs. We are committed to working closely with your Nation to ensure that your voices are heard and respected. Our engagement process is intended to be meaningful to achieve cultural understanding in planning, developing and implementing long-term operational household recycling programs for your Nation.
What financial support or incentives will be available to Nations participating in the program?
- Our extended producer responsibility recycling model is based on a per-household payment and allows financial assistance to help with the costs of implementing the recycling program.
Start Your Nation’s Recycling Journey
Step 1: Community Readiness Assessment
Start by completing a short assessment to help us understand your Nation’s current recycling program, infrastructure, and needs. This information helps SK Recycles provide tailored supports, identify potential next steps, and build a strong foundation for collaboration. Once the assessment is complete our Indigenous relations representative from SK Recycles will contact you.
What’s included in the assessment?
- Existing waste and recycling services
- Infrastructure (e.g., transfer stations, hauling contracts)
- Community engagement and leadership support
- Partnerships or past projects with ISC or municipalities

Step 2: Access Federal Support through Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)
Funding is available for a range of waste management activities, such as:
- waste management agreements with municipalities and service providers (municipal-type agreements)
- construction of transfer stations
- construction of engineered landfills in remote and isolated communities
- waste reduction and diversion initiatives such as recycling, composting and hazardous waste management programs
- waste operator training
- waste awareness and education programming
- landfill management and closing of refuse sites
- development of waste management plans and feasibility studies

We align with Saskatchewan Aboriginal Land Technicians’ vision to support and increase capacity for First Nations managing their lands and Traditional territories in a way that respects local customs and traditions while enhancing community well-being and self-determination.
