Styrofoam Densification in Saskatchewan:
Advancing Local Processing to Lower Emissions
So what actually happens to styrofoam (foam packaging) after you drop it off for recycling at a depot?
Last year we jointly invested in new foam densifier with SARCAN Recycling, to be based out of their Saskatoon facility, strengthening the infrastructure used to manage foam packaging collected from residents across Saskatchewan.
The densifier compresses foam at a 50:1 ratio, dramatically reducing volume before transport to end markets in Quebec, where it gets turned into products like construction trim, moulding, park benches and fence posts.
Less truckloads means reduced greenhouse gas emissions that come with transportation, and this improvement is a practical example of how targeted investments in recycling infrastructure can reduce environmental impacts and build a more efficient, sustainable recycling system for Saskatchewan.

1. Residents drop off foam packaging to a SARCAN location
2. The material enters our SK Recycles program
3. Foam is crushed, compacted, then stacked and secured onto pallets for transport
4. Pallets of densified foam then go to Quebec to be made into park benches, fence posts, construction trim, moulding and more
