Managing foam packaging presents a unique challenge in recycling systems. While commonly used to protect goods, foam is extremely lightweight and takes up a significant amount of space, making it inefficient and costly to transport to end markets for recycling.
To address this, SARCAN currently consolidates foam packaging at its two primary warehouse locations in Saskatoon and Regina. Building on this foundation, SK Recycles and SARCAN made a joint investment in 2025 to improve how this material is handled. Together, they invested in a foam densifier that will be installed at SARCAN’s Saskatoon facility, which started densifying March of 2026.
This new equipment represents an important step forward in processing efficiency. The densifier compresses foam at a 50:1 ratio, dramatically reducing its volume. By compacting the material before transport, significantly fewer truckloads will be needed to move foam to the end markets in Quebec, which recycle foam into things like picture frames, construction trim, moulding, park benches and fence posts
The environmental impact of this improvement is substantial. Reducing the number of shipments directly lowers fuel consumption and cuts greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation. It is a practical example of how targeted infrastructure investments can strengthen recycling systems while supporting climate goals.
This advancement reflects a shared commitment between SK Recycles and SARCAN to continuously improve recycling operations, reduce environmental impacts, and build a more efficient and sustainable system for Saskatchewan.
