MMSW Expands Membership of Board of Directors

Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW) is pleased to announce the expansion of its Board of Directors with the addition of three new board members on Thursday, August 19, 2021. The new members represent three major companies and span the restaurant, grocery and retail industries, and each has a strong presence in Western Canada. The new directors are:

  • Robyn Collver – Senior Vice President, Regulatory & Chief Sustainability Officer, Canadian Tire Corporation
  • Ian Gordon – SVP – Plastic Waste Reduction, Loblaw Companies Limited
  • Angela Griffiths – Vice President, Food Safety, Animal Welfare & Environment, A&W Food Services Inc.

“All of these new board members bring a passion for sustainability and advancing the circular economy, as well as deep knowledge of their respective industries,” said Debbie Baxter, MMSW Board Chair. “I am very pleased to welcome such a diverse group of leaders who will help guide MMSW in its mandate and significantly enhance its governance.”

Ms. Collver joined Canadian Tire in 2002 and, in her current role, leads Canadian Tire’s sustainability initiatives, including the reduction of plastics in packaging. She previously held the role of chair of the board of directors of Stewardship Ontario, another extended producer responsibility organization for packaging and paper products.

Mr. Gordon has dedicated his career to consumer-packaged goods, spending the last 14 years with Loblaw Companies with a focus on marketing and executive leadership. He has recently taken on responsibility for Loblaw’s commitment to contribute to a sustainable circular economy and is passionate about waste reduction.

Ms. Griffiths has a doctorate in resource management and environmental studies and oversees the sustainability and circular economy initiatives at A&W. Throughout her career, Ms. Griffiths has worked with Fortune 100 companies in food services, retail and electronics sectors, among many others.

“We are delighted to announce this expansion of the board, which will further enhance our depth of knowledge and bring new perspectives to guide MMSW as extended producer responsibility evolves in the province,” said Ms. Baxter. “Together, their voices will bring strategic leadership and sound governance at a time when extended producer responsibility is rapidly evolving.”

The search for new members to the Board of Directors began in January 2020. MMSW engaged an independent, third-party firm, Watson Governance, to conduct a review of its board and seek opportunities to expand its membership. An extensive search, temporarily delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulted in the selection of several strong steward directors, and positions the board to provide excellent governance to MMSW’s operations while ensuring fiscal responsibility.

The new board members join Ms. Baxter, a partner with Deloitte who sits as an independent director and Board Chair of MMSW, Dale Botting, founder of Botting Leadership Inc., a former deputy minister with the Government of Saskatchewan and founding CEO of Enterprise Saskatchewan and Innovation Saskatchewan, and Bob Chant, a senior advisor at StrategyCorp Inc.
